What is investment casting advantages and disadvantages?

Investment Casting usually refers to the use of fusible materials to make a pattern, coating the surface of the pattern with several layers of refractory materials to make a mold shell, and then melting the pattern out of the mold shell to obtain a mold without parting surface, which is fired at high temperature. The casting method, which can be filled with sand and poured afterward, is often referred to as "Lost Wax Casting" due to the wide use of waxy materials to make patterns. Currently commonly used Investment Casting Parts include Stainless Steel Castings, alloy steel castings, Carbon Steel Castings, Aluminum alloy castings and Copper Castings and so on.

The shapes of investment casting castings are relatively complex. In production, some parts that are originally composed of several parts can be designed to be integral parts by changing the structure of the parts, so as to save processing time and material consumption.

Investment casting has the following advantages:

1) It can be made into blanks with complex shapes, especially with complex inner cavities, such as boxes, cylinder blocks, etc.

2) Adapt to a wide range.

3) Casting can directly use low-cost waste parts and chips, and the equipment cost is low.

4) The size and quality of castings are almost unlimited.

5) The shape and size of castings are very close to the parts, thus reducing the workload of cutting and saving a lot of metal materials.

6) High dimensional accuracy and geometric accuracy.

7) High surface finish.

Investment casting has the following disadvantages:

1) There are many production processes, the process is difficult to control, and the castings are prone to defects.

2) Higher cost.

Investment casting is suitable for the production of small parts with complex shapes, high precision requirements, or difficult to perform other processing, such as turbine engine blades.
